Victor Ponta

Victor-Viorel Ponta ( born 20 September 1972) is a Romanian jurist and politician who has served as Prime Minister of Romania since May 2012. A member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and its leader since 2010, as well as joint leader of the Social Liberal Union, he has been a member of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies for Gorj County since 2004. In the Emil Boc cabinet, he was Minister-Delegate for Relations with Parliament from 2008 to 2009.

 

Personal Life

Ponta and his first wife Roxana (a high school sweetheart) have one son; they divorced in 2006. That October, in China, he quietly wed Daciana Sârbu, a future Member of the European Parliament and the daughter of Ponta's Boc cabinet colleague Ilie Sârbu. The couple's relationship had become serious in 2004, after Ponta's son was born; they had a daughter in March 2008 and married in a Romanian Orthodox ceremony in the church in Bucharest's Grădina Icoanei that June.

 

Ponta is the winner of the 1989 youth national championship in basketball, where he played for CSA Steaua București (Basketball); and of the 2008 Dacia Logan Cup, where he was a co-pilot. He was made a knight of the National Order for Faithful Service in 2002, and in 2004 received the Order of the Star of Italian Solidarity.

Traian Băsescu

Traian Băsescu is the current president of Romania. After serving as the mayor of Bucharest from June 2000 until December 2004, he was elected president in the Romanian Presidential Elections of 2004 and inaugurated on December 20, 2004. He was re-elected president for a second 5-year term in 2009, amidst allegations of electoral fraud that were dismissed by the courts.

In April 2007, Băsescu became the first president in Romania's history to be officially suspended from office, but he was reinstated a month later in a public referendum by a 3–to–1 margin.

Birth and Early Life

Băsescu was born in Basarabi (renamed Murfatlar in 2007), near the port city of Constanţa, the largest Romanian port on the Black Sea. Băsescu's father, Dumitru (d. 2002), was an army officer; his mother's first name is Elena (d. 2010). He has a brother, Mircea (b. 1953). Traian Băsescu and his wife Maria have two daughters, Ioana and Elena.

Professional career

Băsescu graduated from the Naval Institute of Constanţa in 1976 and became a merchant marine deck officer at Navrom, the Romanian state-owned shipping company. Between 1981 and 1987 he served as Captain on Romanian commercial ships. Throughout his career, questions have been raised about Basescu's links to the Securitate, the security services of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. But Basescu has said his links with the former Securitate were minimal, though some contact was obligatory at the time for somebody working abroad in a senior position. In 1984 he was promoted to Captain of the oil tanker Biruinţa, the largest ship of the then Romanian commercial fleet. In 1989, Băsescu moved to Belgium to head the Navrom Agency in Antwerp.

Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu

Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu (born September 22, 1968) is a Romanian historian, diplomat, politician and the current Prime Minister of Romania. He was the foreign minister of Romania from December 28, 2004 to March 12, 2007, and he was appointed as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service later in 2007. Following the resignation of the Emil Boc government he was designated prime minister by President Traian Băsescu.

Mihai Răzvan Ungureanu is married and has one son. He speaks eight languages.

Education

Ungureanu studied math and physics at the Costache Negruzzi high-school in Iaşi, where he graduated valedictorian in 1988. Ungureanu studied afterwards history and philosophy at the University of Iaşi which he graduated in 1992, while between 1990 and 1992 he was a member of the university senate. In 1993, Ungureanu obtained a master's degree at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, an affiliated programme of St Cross College at the University of Oxford. In March 2004 he received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Iaşi after submitting a thesis on the "Conversion and integration in the Romanian society in the early-modern era".

Dinu Patriciu

Dan Costache "Dinu" Patriciu (born 1950), is a billionaire businessman and entrepreneur with a long standing involvement in real estate. In 1998 he led an investor buyout of the previously state-owned Romanian oil company, Rompetrol. Nine years later, in 2007, he had built the company into a $8.6 billion turnover multinational midstream and downstream oil company before selling to Kazakhstan's state-owned energy operator, KazMunaiGaz. He owns Adevarul Holding media trust, which publishes Forbes Romania under license from Forbes Media LLC. He is also a prominent member of the National Liberal Party of Romania and a member of the International Advisory Board of the Atlantic Council, a US-headquartered think tank. According to Forbes, as of 2008, Dinu Patriciu is the richest man in Romania, and the 397th richest person in the world by 2009, with a fortune of $2.5 billion.

Background

Dinu Patriciu holds a degree from the Bucharest Institute of Architecture. He has received a number of architectural design awards in Romania and abroad.[citation needed] He has an extensive background in the real estate industry, having completed more than forty housing and commercial projects in Romania and more than 25 luxury residential complexes, offices and hotels in the United Arab Emirates. He is married and has two daughters: Ana and Maria.
