Monica Seles was born on December 2, 1973 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). She was one of the dominant woman tennis stars in the 1990s, with multiple wins in all grand-slam tournaments; including the French Open, Australian Open and U.S. Open. She lost Wimbledon in 1991 and 1992 to rival Steffi Graf. In 1993, Seles was stabbed by a Graf fan and stopped competing temporarily. She retired in 2008.
